Zarif, Hariri meeting in Beirut significant

TEHRAN, Nov. 08 (MNA) – Foreign Minister Javad Zarif has visited Lebanese new Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri in a significant visit.

Earlier on Tuesday, Zarif visited Lebanese and Palestinian members of the resistance front, and he then was received by Tammam Salam, the caretaker Prime Minister, and Hezbollah’s celebrated Hassan Nasrallah.

Lebanon is on the spotlight after Michel Aoun, a former army general, approached considerably to Hezbollah and Iran in the convoluted politics of Lebanon to be elected the new president; however, this would not be possible except for Hariri’s strategic U-turn in politics and support for Aoun for the presidency, which has largely been seen by observers the downfall of Saudi-affiliated Future Movement, to which Saad al-Hariri belongs and is a leader.

Zarif’s visit to Hariri indicates a shift in Hariri’s policy which once was a Saudi-aligned politician and one who opposed Hezbollah. This is significant in that Hariri visited on Sunday a group of Hezbollah faction in the Parliament for the first time during years, and reportedly had signaled his regards for Seyed Hassan Nasrallah of Hezbollah, now that both politicians have aligned to bring stability to Lebanese highly volatile political terrain.

Mr. Zarif and his entourage will leave to Eastern Europe where he will be on a tour of the countries.
